Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT)
Preferred Name Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT)
Definition Anatomical data is acquired by scanning the patient in a treatment position. The data are transferred to the three-dimensional (3D) treatment planning system, which visualises the clinical target volume and then adds a surrounding safety margin. Real-time verification of the irradiation field using portal imaging allows comparison of the treated and simulated fields, and correction of deviations where displacement is more than 5 mm. Threedimensional
CRT improves local control through dose escalation, without significantly increasing the risk of morbidity.
